The IC697BEM711 is a Bus Interface Module (BEM) functioning as a bus receiver, primarily designed to enable rack expansion in industrial control systems. Its core capability lies in supporting the integration of additional I/O and specialty modules, while allowing the connection of up to 7 expansion racks to the primary PLC system.
Equipped with two dedicated communication interfaces, the module features a Port 1 configured as an upstream expansion port for connecting to the CPU rack or other BEM711/BEM713 modules. The second interface serves as a downstream expansion port, facilitating daisy-chain connections to subsequent expansion racks or additional BEM711 modules. The maximum allowable cable length between any two BEM711 or BEM713 modules is 50 feet (15 meters). Beyond rack expansion, the IC697BEM711 offers valuable system-level functionality: it enables fault isolation by transmitting low-level data signals across communication cables, simplifying troubleshooting and maintenance through the isolation of individual expansion racks. Additionally, it supports an output hold function, which allows output modules in a failed or under-maintenance rack to retain their last operational state.
For real-time status monitoring, the module is fitted with three LED indicators, displaying Rack OK, Last Rack, and Bus Active statuses respectively. Configuration is fully software-driven, achievable via MS-DOS or Windows-based programming packages. A critical requirement for expanded system setups is the installation of a terminating resistor (catalog number: IC697ACC702) on the final expansion rack; this component signals the end of the network and identifies the last node in the configuration.
The IC697BEM711 occupies a single slot within the PLC chassis and operates on a 5 VDC input voltage, with a backplane current consumption of 800 mA (0.8 Amps). Its high-speed parallel bus expansion interface supports a data transmission rate of 500 Kbytes/sec and adheres to the VME standard C.1. For system wiring, a range of compatible I/O cables is available, including: 5-foot (IC600WD005A), 10-foot (IC600WD010A), 25-foot (IC600WD025A), and 50-foot (IC600WD050A) variants. A key installation note is that system power must be fully shut down before inserting the module into its designated slot.
